Composite and Metal Foams
Porous metals or metallic foams are engineering materials with a unique combination of physical and mechanical properties. They have been developed during recent years used in various fields. It is expected a growth in application of these type of materials due to their novel properties .
The properties include high specific strength, good thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, compression damping , and excellent acoustic properties. Open-cell metallic foams have been used successfully in filtering applications, as well heat exchanger.
ACECR Mashhad branch, for the first time in Iran, could set up a pilot for production of close cell Aluminum foam in 2011.
Some of the main application of metal foams are listed as follows:
- Automotive industry as an energy absorption
- Structural industry as a sound absorption and light materials
- Heat exchanger in Power plants and refineries industry
- Defense industry as an energy absorption and resistant to explosion
- Catalyzer and rechargeable battery
- Biomaterials as porous implants
- Filters and separators in polluted environments and industries
- Aerospace industry as a light and energy absorption materials
- Casting industries as a light core
- Silencer in industrial equipment
